Devon sat on the porch of his family’s lake house, focused on his favorite video game. Outside was bright and sunny, but he preferred the world inside his screen. His cousin Sandy, though, had other ideas.
“Devon, come on! It’s a beautiful day!” Sandy called, already wearing her climbing shoes and ready for an adventure. “Let’s go explore the rocks down by the lake!”
Devon frowned. “Nah, I’m good. I’ll just stay here and play my game.”
Sandy, as usual, wasn’t about to take no for an answer. She stepped up to him, determined. “You can’t stay inside all summer! You might actually like it out there if you try.”
“I’m not like you, Sandy. You’re good at everything. I’m just… me.”
Sandy gave him a serious look. “I wasn’t always good at climbing. I used to be scared. But you know what helped me?”
Devon raised an eyebrow. “What?”
“Being brave and trying. That’s all it takes.”
Devon stared at his game, unsure. He’d never really tried much outside—what if he was terrible at it? But Sandy seemed so sure that he could do it.
He sighed and finally put the game down. “Okay,” he said slowly, “I’ll try, but don’t expect much.”
Sandy’s face lit up. “That’s all I wanted to hear! Come on, let’s get ready.”
Devon couldn’t believe what he was about to do. He had never rock climbed in his life, and now he was heading to the big rock wall by the lake. It looked huge to him, but Sandy didn’t seem worried at all.
Standing at the base of the rock wall, Devon’s stomach did a flip. It looked taller than he remembered. Sandy handed him a helmet and some climbing shoes.
“Ready?” Sandy asked.
Devon swallowed hard. “Not really.”
“That’s okay. I’ll be right here beside you. Just take it slow and steady,” she said, securing the safety ropes.
Devon’s hands were shaking as he grabbed the first rock. He pulled himself up, expecting to fall. But he didn’t. Slowly, he reached for the next handhold and then the next. Bit by bit, he was climbing.
“You’re doing great, Devon!” Sandy cheered from below. “Keep going!”
Devon’s legs wobbled as he climbed higher, but he focused on breathing and moving one step at a time. Before he knew it, he was halfway up the wall! His fear started to melt away, replaced by excitement. Could he actually do this?
With Sandy encouraging him, Devon pushed himself higher. And then—he made it! He reached the top of the rock wall and pulled himself up, breathless but proud.
“I made it!” he yelled down to Sandy, feeling a surge of joy.
Sandy joined him at the top, grinning. “I knew you could do it!”
As Devon sat on the top of the rock, looking out over the lake, he couldn’t believe what had just happened. He, Devon, the kid who only played video games, had climbed a rock wall.
“I guess you were right,” Devon admitted with a small laugh. “That was actually… fun.”
Sandy nudged him with her elbow. “There’s a whole world out here, Devon. You’re braver than you think. All it takes is trying.”
As they climbed back down together, Devon felt something new inside him—a little spark of confidence. Maybe there were more things out there for him to try. Maybe, just maybe, he was ready for new adventures.
