Emmy was a sweet and smart little girl with a big heart. She was 5 years old and loved her stuffed animals more than anything. They were her best friends, and she always took them on adventures. But sometimes, Emmy could be a little goofy, and she would forget to listen to her parents.
Tomorrow was a big day: It was Emmy’s first day of kindergarten! Emmy was excited, but she was also a little nervous. She wondered what it would be like. Would she make new friends? Would her teacher be nice? Most of all, Emmy knew she had to remember to be a good listener.
Before bed, Emmy’s mommy and daddy sat with her and her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Bear.
“Emmy,” Mommy said gently, “kindergarten is going to be so much fun! You’ll meet new friends, learn new things, and have a wonderful time.”
“But remember, Emmy,” Daddy added, “it’s important to listen to your teacher and follow the rules. That way, you’ll have the best time possible.”
Emmy hugged Mr. Bear and nodded. “I’ll try my best to be a good listener,” she said with a smile.
The next morning, Emmy woke up bright and early. She put on her new dress, brushed her hair, and even made sure Mr. Bear was safe at home. After breakfast, it was time to go!
When Emmy arrived at kindergarten, she saw lots of kids playing and laughing. Her classroom was full of colors, with pictures on the walls and toys on the shelves. Emmy’s teacher, Miss Parker, greeted her with a warm smile.
“Welcome to kindergarten, Emmy!” Miss Parker said. “We’re going to have so much fun today!”
Emmy smiled back and felt a little better. She knew today would be a good day.
The day started with circle time, where all the kids sat together on the big carpet. Miss Parker read a story about a little dog who loved to play, but sometimes got too excited and forgot to listen.
Emmy listened carefully, just like the little dog learned to do in the story. She knew that listening was important, and she wanted to be just like the good listener in the book.
After the story, it was time for art. Miss Parker gave each child a piece of paper and some crayons. “Let’s draw a picture of our favorite animal,” she said.
Emmy thought about Mr. Bear and decided to draw a picture of him. She colored carefully, making sure to give Mr. Bear a big, happy smile.
While she was drawing, Emmy heard Miss Parker say, “Remember, friends, when we’re done, let’s put our crayons away and sit quietly.”
Emmy finished her picture and started to get up to show it to her friend. But then she remembered what Miss Parker had said. “Oh! I need to put my crayons away first!” she whispered to herself. Emmy cleaned up her crayons and sat down quietly. She felt proud of herself for listening.
During snack time, Emmy sat next to a girl named Lily. Lily had a stuffed bunny that she brought to school.
“I love your bunny!” Emmy said, smiling.
“Thanks! What’s your favorite stuffed animal?” Lily asked.
“Mr. Bear! He’s at home today,” Emmy replied. The girls giggled and shared their snacks. Emmy was happy to have made a new friend.
After snack time, it was time to play outside. Emmy and Lily played on the swings and climbed on the jungle gym.
They laughed and ran around, having so much fun together.
Soon, it was time to go home. Miss Parker gathered all the kids together for one last circle time. “You all did such a great job today,” she said. “I’m so proud of how well everyone listened!”
Emmy felt her heart swell with happiness. She had tried her best to listen all day, and it had made her first day of kindergarten so much fun.
When Emmy’s mommy and daddy picked her up, she told them all about her day—about the story, the picture she drew of Mr. Bear, and her new friend Lily.
“I remembered to listen, just like you said!” Emmy told them with a big smile.
Mommy and Daddy gave her a big hug. “We’re so proud of you, Emmy!” they said. “You’re going to have so many wonderful adventures in kindergarten.”
That night, as Emmy snuggled in bed with Mr. Bear, she thought about her day. Kindergarten wasn’t so scary after all. It was full of fun and new friends, and all she had to do was listen and try her best.
Emmy smiled and closed her eyes, excited for all the new things she would learn tomorrow.
